Any advice on how to make a dog stop digging?

I wouldn't mind a little hole here and there, but he is digging trenches! He's a yellow lab/ weimer mix. He's 7 months old. I need some advice because when he is digging and dirt goes flyng into my neighbors flower beds she gets pretty mad. Besides that, I'm afraid he'll come upon a power line or something. Help!

Any advice on how to make a dog stop digging?
Parts of my yard look like a missile test site, I have Bloodhounds. You really should not leave him out in the yard too long because digging is very fun for some dogs. You need to give him more exercise. Your pup is a high energy mix breed. Finally, I'd fence off a small area where he can dig and you won't mind. Compost heaps can be fun. Don't put poop in the holes. If your dog has worms, you can be infecting the soil with parasites permanently, also nothing will kill grass faster.
Reply:Please don't do the snap-trap thing!! The dog could get it stuck on his/her paw and run off because it is scared or hurt and cause an injury trying to get the trap off his paw!! I don't think you want to hurt the dog!

Anyway, I have the same problem with my dog. This weekend I am going to try the chili powder - and some pepper. I have never heard of the Vicks Vapor rub - and I am still trying to figure out how I would get that to work ??? But I have a friend that did the pepper and chili powder thing and after a few times - the dog eventually got the idea!

Good luck ! We will most likely be doing the same thing this weekend.... Filling in holes in our yard!! =)
Reply:i know you wont like this, but, try getting the snap trap and let him hit it once or more time and when it grabs him on the nose or the paw he will not want to dig again.

oh the trap wont hurt him and he wont like it but trust me he wont do it again
Reply:I'll start with the old joke, "How do you stop a dog digging? - Take away his spade!"

To be more constructive, you may find a water pistol helps. Hide and watch your dog, when he does dig squirt him with the water pistol. It is important that he doesn't see you squirt him, as then he will only not dig when you are around. He will come to associate the water spray with digging and hopefully stop. We used this method to stop our Lab eating duck poo. Good luck.

Reply:Getting a dog comes together with things like that. I would like to have a dog too, but this sort of things made me have a cat instead. A dog is a dog. Dogs dig. Sorry, but that's how it works.
Reply:Give the dog a designated area to dig. You can make a large square from landscape timbers and bury a soup bone or 2 in it a few inches down. Continue to train the dog to only dig in this spot. Digging is good exercise for dogs. This method does work! Also you can pick up his poop and put it where he is digging now. He will not want to dig in his own waste.
Reply:3 things always come in handy with dogs

vicks vapour rub

chillie powder

citrenella

good luck

vicks is great because you can smear it on to things eg sprinkler risers and it wont wash off in a hurry. put it on a old rag ang hang it off the line dogs hate the smell and wont jump up. Smear it on a brick and put it in the garden where pup shouldnt be, works great !
Reply:Get a little sand pit for him to dig in. My dog is 10 months old and still destroys gardens though. People keep saying she will grow out of it I hope so. Good luck to you.
