Do Republicans really think A free Iraq will bennifit the United States?

If we do install some sort of "muslim democracy" over there, won't the cleric who yells "death to American, The great satan" the loudest, be the man who will rise to power? It's not like they are tossing flowers at us over there!

Do Republicans really think A free Iraq will bennifit the United States?
Correction you are totally wrong. Have you read the blogs that some of the Iraqi citizens have blogged about. They are glad that Saddam is gone. They are enjoying new beneifts such as movies, shopping , and voting. And even if Iraq doesn't benefit us, the U.S. is trying to spread democracy across the world. Didn't you watch or hear the State of the Union address last night. Over 60% of the world's government are democracy.
Reply:I am not a Republican, but I can offer up an answer here. Many people who favor a free, democratic Iraq are fully aware of what kind of government is likely to result in the short term. Look around the Middle East today at the most recent elections: Iran gets an ultra-conservative Muslim hard-liner for president, Egypt sees the Muslim Brotherhood making big gains in the election last year, and Hamas basically won in a landslide in the Palestinian election. Clearly, Islamic fundametalist politics is riding a wave of renewed popularity in the region, (and many people credit our actions as partially fueling this). In any case, even the dyed-in-the-wool Neo-cons no longer believe in the hearts and flowers scenario where the locals greet us as liberating heroes.

Nevertheless, there are people who staunchly believe in the power of democracy to transform nations. Their reasoning is that if democracy takes hold, the people will eventually elect good leaders, the hardliners will soften over time due to the necessity of governance, and that the short term rise of anti-Western regimes will eventually play out as the nations in question become more involved in the global marketplace. Democracy over time is a force that increases liberty, and combined with globalization, increases the odds of good behavior by nation states.

This logic is attractive, but it does depend on democracy itself taking hold as a value. If you have a government that acts to manipulate the democratic process, like Saddam Hussein or the Texas state legislature, then those trends toward opennes and fairness will not appear.

In addition, we have a foundational belief in our system that government should be by the consent of the governed. So if a free Iraq elects a rabid anti-Western regime, we have to face up to that without abandoning the principles we hold dear.
Reply:I do not know what Republicans think, because I am not one.

I do however think that an Iraq free of Sadam Hussain will benefit not only the USA, But also the entire world.

It sounds to me like you have not ever known any of the Iraqi people. There are many in the USA. You might want to get to know some of them. I have, as well as many others from other places in the world too.

IF "the cleric who yells death to American, The great satan, the loudest" DOES get elected, then that is their CHOICE, and they (we) will have to live with it. But the point is it WILL be their choice. That is what democracy is about.

A free Iraq will benefit from NOT having a dictator.

A free Iraq will benefit from their National leader NOT committing genocide against his own people.

A free Iraq will benefit from NOT haveing a dictator who allows his sons to rape and murder the women of their country at will.

A free Iraq will benefit from NOT having a dictator who robs and hoards the national treasures for himself and leaves his country in poverty.

A free Iraq will help to stabilize the Middle East.

A free Iraq will mean being able to benefit from their own natural resources, bringing 25 million people out of poverty and helping to stabilize oil prices around the world.

There are so many more reasons too, but the point IS, a Free Iraq will benefit NOT ONLY the USA, but ALSO Iraq and the entire world.
Reply:A free Iraq will benefit the United States of America, will it happen right now in 2006? I don't know. But the march of freedom continues, and we have to try.

Citizens of the world try to come to America and while here they sometimes get the rights to vote and go to our juries,

so it can happen there,

I don't buy that it will automatically become a muslim theocracy, but if evil rears its ugly head, the United States has its option with mean mother green.
Reply:No, republicans do not believe that...

A select few believe that war with Iraq, supplying the military there, and oil revenue will make them rich. Ahem (George Bush, Dlck Cheney...)
Reply:no they arent they hate us over there. Im not sure what the republicans think but i am guessing that its something along those lines. probably planning on them being eternally grweatful or something. it isnt gonna happen. the longer we are in there the more of our troops and innocent ppl die. and once we are out they are left to their own devices.. im not sure thats a good thing.
Reply:Who knows what Democrats/Republicans think? They keep saying it's for freedom for Iraq. Personally, when the US pulls out of Iraq think things will be same as before unless the people of Iraq want change. Politics is not always the most honest profession.
Reply:No, Republicnas don't. But Bush Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Cheney do, so here we are. It will devolve into a theocratic civil war after we leave.
