Somewhere down the line of our evolutionary ancestors millions of years ago this trait was selected for and successfully passed along to us. As for the various religions, they began as attempts to explain the phenomena we explain today with science and to keep a savage people under control. Religion was society's all in one fix: politics, medicine, psychotherapy, law... Today we have those structures outside of religion; so thats why you get so confused trying to relate all those things that you've tried to relate, becuase they don't make any sense and are part of an outdated system of beliefs. They do have a certain charm though, like when you go to the Louvre and see Egyptian mummies.
