My friend and I want to dress up as Mario and Luigi for Purim- any ideas to help us out?

We'd like to put together our own Mario and Luigi costumes- we can use our own red/green shirts or whatever, but what should we do for the hats? Also, we thought it'd be cute to carry around Super Mario "accessories," ie- mushroom, those turtle things, flowers (fire power)- can anyone thing of anything else we can do? Thanks so much!!!! Any ideas would really help!!

Easy Costumes

Although the most detailed and elaborate costumes require patterns and sewing, here are a few simple ideas you can put together from items easily found at secondhand and craft shops - you may even have some of these things lying around your house. Minimal sewing expertise is required for a finished product. These popular characters are easily recognizable to most fans if you put the costume together well.

Keep in mind that since these costumes are easy to do, you will see a lot of these characters at anime conventions (and some really look thrown-together). This is a good place to start if you'd like to get into cosplay, but your character may not be unique.

Characters:

Team Rocket

Radical Ed

Mario or Luigi

Link (Adult)

Link (Child)

Saria/Kokiri

Monkey D. Luffy

Team Rocket

What you need:

- White turtleneck, slightly oversized (a white sweatshirt will also work)

- White pants w/ belt (James) or white skirt (Jessie)

- Black shirt, form fitting (cropped for Jessie)

- Black boots or shoe covers

- Black gloves (can be found at costume shops)

- Red fabric paint

- Wig: long red (Jessie) or shoulder-length blue (James)

- Green earrings (Jessie)

- Optional: fake rose (for James), plush Meowth

Cut the bottom off the turtleneck and cut the inverted V shape out of the front (be sure to check a reference picture first). Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt (between the two layers of fabric) and paint a red "R" on the front with fabric paint.

Layer the costume pieces, add the accessories, and you're done. Be sure to memorize the TR motto!

Radical Ed (Cowboy Bebop)

What you need:

- White T-shirt

- Black spandex shorts

- Orange wig (short) or spray-in hair color

- Goggles

- Pink makeup for cheeks

- Optional: plush Ein

Cut the bottom and sleeves off the T-shirt, add the other parts, and your costume is ready to go. Drink too much coffee and you'll soon be acting just like Ed!

Mario or Luigi

What you need:

- Red (Mario) or green (Luigi) long-sleeved T-shirt (sweatshirt or short-sleeve T-shirt will also work)

- Blue overalls

- White gloves (can be found at costume shops)

- Red (Mario) or green (Luigi) plain baseball cap

- White fabric paint

- Red or green fabric paint or Sharpie markers

- Brown shoes or shoe covers

- Black Fun Foam - 1 sheet

- Spirit Gum (can be found at costume shops)

- Optional: plumbing equipment (plunger, wrench, etc), Dust Devil-type vacuum for Luigi, or any kind of Mario prop (mushroom, star, etc)

Hat can be made by painting a white circle on the front of the baseball cap with fabric paint. Once it dries, use a red/green Sharpie or fabric paint on top of the circle to make the "M" or "L". If you can't find white gloves, you can make your own by tracing around your hand on two layers of white fabric and stitching the two pieces together. Cut a mustache shape from the black Fun Foam sheet, and affix it to your face with Spirit Gum (you can also make black eyebrows to match).
Reply:The colour of the hats should be black.Or red for Mario and Green for Luigi.
