So....hippies. whats the deal with those guys?

So the other night I watched a movie called "Hair" starring Treat Williams. Its from '79 and it takes place in the '60s "flower power" revolution. as im watching this flick I cant understand why people dont like them.

I mean the movie had almost a surreal feeling to it,like fantasy. looking at how it was for them then and how it is for us now, its hard to imagine there ever even being a time like that, or for so many people to have the same beliefs that way. I took it as this idea of free expression and just wanting to live life for your own causes and your own purpose. Im sure the drug use and anonymous sex left a lot to be desired behind the scenes, but I just think that their belief system and way of thinking is beautiful, almost makes me wish I was born back then.

So, why now do a lot of people feel so strongly against hippie lifestyle? If I could, Id go back and have some fun fer sure.

So....hippies. whats the deal with those guys?
the ravers of the 90's and 2000's are the modern day hippies... just different drugs... well one new one... some are still are the same. if you really want to feel like a hippie, go to a massive rave (+20,000) people. the atmosphere is beautiful and everyone lives for a different cause. of course most of these people have normal 9-5 jobs and pay bills, but once a month these people will let loose and realize that there is more to life than just running the rat race. it is a surreal experience that i feel everyone should do at least once. be cautious and go with a big group of people who have done it before... im sure you have been asked to go to one... accept the offer next time. you wont regret it. people there follow one code.... PLUR... Peace, Love, Unity, Respect... it is how you will be treated at a rave, everyone is super friendly. It will change your life for the better... it will be an eye opener. The thing about being a hippie or a raver is that one day you will stop the drugs and life goes back to normal... the experiences will last a lifetime and so will your outlook on life. Most hippies and ravers eventually grow up and snap out of it, but their hearts remain filled with that "lifestyle" that you mentioned. It is not too late, raves are still around even the scene "died out." The rave scene got a bad rap after a few bad apples danced to much and dehydrated to death. The drugs do not kill you.... just dont too much. Raves can be found in any major city, Im from LA and there is a massive (+20,000 people) almost every month. I am teaching english in Japan now and that scene is still very much alive out here, just way more illegal. Be safe, have fun, and open your mind.
Reply:Hmmmm, I dunno why people dislike them. I think people are just jealous b/c hippies are just so easy going and the rest are so stressed.

I am living the hippy lifestyle daily :)

BTW, it is entirely possible to be both successful in life AND a hippy.
Reply:Hippies were free spirits who smoked lots of pot. Many people are conservative and did not like their casual/laid back lifestyle. Some of the coolest people I know were and still are hippies.
Reply:Because they aren't into consumerism basically.

And as we live in a capitalist society, there ain't no room for folk who don't want to work to make some one else rich!!!

Or, buy stuff to make some one else rich!

They believe in living with the earth's resources and have built some very politically correct housing in keeping with green principles. IE , using recycled goods, and innovative architecture which reduces the reliance on environmentally fragile goods. Then they have been told to demolish them!!!

I wonder why???
Reply:I'm one of the old hippies, hung out with Pigpen of the Dead in Haight Ashbury, saw Hendrix at Winterland, marched in Peace marches, saw Joplin at Fillmore West, attended a lot of concerts, smoked dope, did the whole bit. We were more hated for our politics than anything. Our "Peace %26amp; Love" stance was a real threat to the establishment at the time, and yes, we were looked upon as freaks.

In truth, we were young, idealistic kids who just wanted a better world, without war and poverty. Not sure we accomplished much, seeing as to how the world is being run today. But many of us really did have good intentions.

P.S. - Hubby %26amp; I really enjoyed attending the 40th Anniversary of Summer of Love in Golden Gate Park a few months ago. The last time I had been out there for such an event was in 1967, at the Human Be-In. It smelled the same as 40 years ago, albeit of a higher grade.
Reply:damn, that's hot. let's be like a couple of hippies and just do it. :-) flower power baby!! yay!!
Reply:Because at the time their beliefs went against those of the majority culture. Throughout history, groups like that were always frowned upon, despite the fact that they were being revolutionary or were representing something that was good for society as a whole. People who are different or misunderstood always get flack and you see it to this day whether it's racism, people still downing hippies, you slamming that "weird guy" at the office. It's sad.
Reply:there are hippies out there now! join them :)
Reply:Try to find a Rainbow gathering in your area.

Spend the weekend at least.

You'll get to see a less biased view and you'll see the community response which will answer all your questions.
Reply:sorry i didn't want to read it all soo i'm just gonna say...

PEICE OUT!
Reply:The hippies did nothing productive, other than satisfy personal impulses.
Reply:Because back in the sixties they were dicrminanted against because they were not conservitive. In those days it was really bad not to cut your hair High and tight. It was just a diffrent time. Not very accepting of the hair and drugs and clothes as we are now adays
Reply:Unfortunately, the human heart is fickle and greed and hostility tend to take over when the belly is hungry and the mind is bored. The idea that we can wander around sharing peace and love only works when someone else is carrying our burden of responsibility---in otherwords someones got to pay the bills. What began as an anti-war and anti-hate campaign quickly became a drug culture that was a form of rebellion all its own. With the blatant disregard for authority (remember we are all equal) there was no one to make decisions, protect the masses or enforce rules....and plenty of people got hurt, through the sex, drugs, stealing, "free" lifestyle. I have the real-deal living nearby as a neighbor. He's got an organic yard (no mowing) and open doors (people come day and night). For the most part they are good neighbors but not the sort of people you can count on....and never never never discuss the war with them....I have never been so appauled as to see the lack of information and respect in a person who's rights are being protected.....I realize that doesnt reflect all hippies....but it does reinforce the stereotype. I cant respect someone who thinks it is okay to spit on a monument or disrespect the purple heart...and I've seen both from these folks.....dont even get me started..........
Reply:because a lot of them were bludgers, unemployed, into plenty of dope and generally not contributing to society
Reply:Even though there are a lot of pros and cons about the hippy culture the pros most times out weigh the cons.

In the beginning, many of the new generation 1962 to 1964 were mostly about folk music and getting back to a simpler time. When the police action of the Vietnam conflict started many people were opposed to fighting a country for no real apparent reason other than political (similar to our Iraq war). Thousands of college students and parents were appaulled when they instituted the draft or a political argument rather than a reason for defense of freedom. Many of the students of that time were into political science, biology, electical engineering (the computer was just starting in popularity), science, and also Art and Literature. It pretty much started in the coffee shops, jazz clubs, and the Beatniks. They were exploring a whole other world since American was being influenced from all over the world with global commerce expanding. Some people just took it to the extreme and used it as an excuse to do whatever they wanted to do. But if it wasn't for the "hippies" and the "beatniks" when wouldn't have the conservationists, the ecologists, the naturalists, and really paid attention about our enviroment and paid much attention to what was going on in our government as we do now. In the mid 1990's to today, more kids from High School to College are paying closer attention to the political workings of our government and those that represent it and their causes. More are even more enviromentally contious with recycling, animal welfare, global warming, pollution, famine, and numerous other causes that effect us today. The hippies today remind us to pay attention, speak up, screw political correctedness when it comes to the issues stated before and learn to work together, love your neighbor, and be more tolerant. What was wrong with those values taught by the hippies.

The darker side of hippydom is the drug use, the unconsentual sex, and the no money or work ethic, theft and loitering, as well as the increased homeless sleeping on personal property, breaking into homes for food ect. Those are the ones that joined the movement for the "fun" aspect of it, but the true hippies that believed in their protests and politics were very easy going people and many knew how to take care of the enviroment and changed our nutritional out look on life. They made us rethink how we were doing things and to look at an alternative to destruction of our planet but a way to coinside within it. I still live by that concept.
Reply:Hippies are deemed dangerous to society as they represent Total freedom of thought, expression and action. With no control, thieves, murderers and the like would also believe they were free to behave any way they choose without repremand. The powers that be feel they have a responsibility to maintainn order, even if that order doesnt suite us.

If you truly wanted to be a hippy , you can be. You would need to be willing to give up on society as we know it though. There are many hippy and self sufficient societies that exist in the world. Seek and ye shall find

Personally i think its rubbish that hippies are dangerous
