Hi everybody,
Could you help me with my writing exercise? I´m a second year and next Monday I´m going to do my exams to get the First Certificate. I'll probably have to do a similar exercise. The order of the words and the verbal tenses are very important. By the way I´m studying British English (I´m Spanish)
Thank you in advance,
Hi Anna,
How are your things? I’ve been very busy with the brochures since Friday but at last I think I´ve just found the perfect place to go on holiday. Sit down and take a deep breath.
What about San Francisco? Both of us have saved enough money to give ourselves that treat.
I’ve read a lot of things about this city and San Francisco is a very cool place. It’s home of hippies and ‘flower power’, and it’s full of friendly and relaxed people. It’s also one of the USA’s most attractive cities.
The airport is 14 miles south of the city. There are several means of transport: Underground (the cheapest one), taxis and airport buses.
If we went to there, we could stay in Castle Inn, located in the heart of San Francisco. It’s in easy walking distance of Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown and fine restaurants and shops. This inn offers great service, great comfort, great facilities, great value and it´s not very expensive. The staff are available from morning to night to any question we have.
In the brochure it´s explained that the best way to explore San Francisco is on foot. There are a lot of interesting places to visit. The Mission District has especially atraccted my attention with their many nightclubs. San Francisco’s got some of the most incredible nightlife and wonderful food in the States. It´s home to over 4500 restaurants and eating places!!! We’ll be able to eat food from anywhere in the world so we won’t be starving.
We´ll also be able to visit Union Square, It’s an important shopping area where every major departament store is nearby. There are expensive clothes shops like Dior, Armani, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, etc. but I don’t think you agree with me on spending so much money.
Well, what do you say? Shall we go to San Francisco?
Write to me soon!!! We have to do a lot of plans

English Grammar?
You're pretty good.
"How are things?" not "How are your things?"
We don't "do plans". We "make plans".
Good luck with the exams.
Reply:The staff are available from morning to night to answer any question we have.
with its many nightclubs
department store (just a typo, right?)
to make a lot of plans (OR do a lot of planning)
Excellent!
Reply:What are we supposed to do with the selection? Correct grammar errors?
Reply:"If we went to there, we could stay in Castle Inn" should be "If we went to there, we could stay at Castle Inn".
"atraccted" spelt wrong
"We´ll also be able to visit Union Square, It’s an important shopping area where every major departament store is nearby." Its shouldn't be capitalised, and the words "where" and "is" dont agree. Consider "We'll be able to visit Union Square, its an important shopping area with every major department store nearby"
You shouldnt etc. in normal written language, and add the word "would" between you and agree
And you don't "do" plans, you make them, or you "do" planning. Replace that sentance with "We have plans to make" or "We've got some planning to do"
Other than that, its a higher level than what a GCSE student would be expected to do - you'll be fine!
Reply:good job...only a few errors.............
1. how are things (not your things)
2. on vacation (not on holiday)
3. it is ( not it's also one of the usa's most attractive cities)
4. if we went there (not if we went to there)
5. the staff is or the staff members are (not the staff are)
6. the staff is or the staff members are (not the staff are)
7. it is explained (not it's)
8. attracted (not atraccted)
9. San Francisco has (not san francisco's got)
***very nice job and i hope that i helped you...GOOD LUCK on the exam!!!

Hi Anna,
How are THINGS? [not 'your things'] I’ve been very busy with the brochures since Friday but at last I think I´ve just found the perfect place to go on holiday. Sit down and take a deep breath.
What about San Francisco? Both of us have saved enough money to give ourselves A treat.

In the brochure it´s explained that the best way to explore San Francisco is on foot. There are a lot of interesting places to visit. Reply:1. well in the first sentence i think you meant to say
"How are things?" ... just take out the word YOUR
2. line 5- "It's a home of hipppies,'flower power' and friendly people. ... (You used AND too many times in that sentence.)
3. line 5- Take out the word THE before USA (because it's not really needed)
4.In the ninth line in the letter say "If we went there, .."
(you don't need to have the word "to")
5.line 9- "...we could stay AT Castle Inn...(Using the word in sounds a little strange there.)
6.line 11- "This inn offers great service, comfort, facilities, value and it´s not very expensive."
(for heaven's sake do NOT use the word GREAT that many times in one sentence)
7.line 12- "The staff "is" available..."
(staff is singular, so you need a singular verb)
8.in the same sentence "from morning to night TO HELP WITH any questionS we have."
9.line 13- "In the brochure, " (add comma)
10.line 13- ATTRACTED spelled wrong
11.line 14- "San Francisco HAS some of the most incredible nightlife and food OF ALL the States.
12. line 15- "..home to over 4500 restaurants."
(to avoid the redundancy)
13.LINE 16- "We’ll be able to eat food from anywhere in the world, so we won’t starve."
12.line 17-"We´ll also be able to visit Union Square, AN important s "
13.line 18- DEPARTMENT misspelled
14.line 19- "I hope you agree with me on not spending too much money" ( just start a new sentence after ETC.)
15.last line "We have a lot of plans to make"
ok there's all my corrections,
i hope i got everything!!!
if you are confused by my corrections, just email me !
